Mount Baldy and Sugarloaf Peak Loop

Image
🥾🥾🥾🥾  Leti pointing to Pfeifferhorn (which she hiked a few weeks later) from Mount Baldy Mount Baldy/Sugarloaf Loop: 7.3 miles. 2,988 vertical feet. Date hiked: Aug. 13, 2022 This hike seemed somewhat doomed from the start. But, in the end, it turned out to be a lovely hike. First, we hiked up a road. That's just bad. Hiking up something you can drive up is no bueno. Second, we heard what we thought was an avalanche control boom, which made exactly zero sense. No snow. We learned later that it was a meteor entering planet Earth. And, it was heard all over the Salt Lake Valley. Third, the helicopter about made us crazy. At first, said helicopter looked so cool. And then, said helicopter kept going up and down the mountain. They aren't exactly known for their silence. Said helicopter was carrying steel posts (or metal somethings) for the skiing season. Luckily, that helicopter finished the job before we made it to Mt. Baldy. But, the solitude we were looking for took a while ...

Trails near Alpine

Image
Approximately three times a year, Leti and I embark on a hiking vacation. We dive into various and sundry mountain ranges and try to take it all in. For our summer vacation, we headed to Alpine, Wyoming, and we hiked around there. The wildflowers were in bloom everywhere we went. It was a lovely vacation.  First stop was Periodic Springs.  🥾🥾🥾🥾 1.5 miles. Elevation gain: 209 feet. Hiked July 20, 2022 This is one of our shorter hikes. And, the name of the Spring was not accurate at this time of year. Last year in July the Springs were periodic. This year, the springs were continuous. So, we hiked up to the springs, ate a snack, waiting to see if the water would slow. It didn't. So, we turned around and headed to our next adventure. It was a lovely 1.5 mile jaunt to discover that the springs were continuous. Ha!  Strawberry Creek Trail to Strawberry Lake 6.4 miles. 1,384 feet elevation gain. Date hiked: July 20, 2022 The next hike we did was to a lake. The drive to the ...

Death by Mt. Raymond via Alexander Basin Trail

Image
ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ 9.6 miles. 4,425 ft. elevation gain. Date hiked: July 16, 2022. Picture taken at Gobbler's Knob with Mt. Raymond in the background, right hand side of the picture. It was on this hike that I was reminded of a piece of imagery that came to my mind a few weeks ago as I was hiking with Leti. Leti, when we hike, is like a mountain goat. Effortlessly scaling mountain tops, occasionally breaking a sweat. Breathing like a normal human. Meanwhile, I am like a hippo in training, gasping for breath as I lumber up the mountain, hoping to summit by some miracle. This is how our hike was yesterday. :) I gave it four boots instead of five because I mainly felt out of shape on this hike.  This hike might be one of those one and done  type hikes for me. We decided to go up Alexander Basin, which was in our top three steepest hiking experiences ever. Something like 1700 ft. elevation gain for .7 of a mile. The first three miles were extremely steep - 1,500 feet per mile. So, as ...

Spring Break Southern Utah Style

Image
ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ Here's Leti standing in front of the Golden Wall at Buckhorn Point. It was more lovely than we imagined.  Golden Wall/Buckhorn Loop. 4.7 miles. Elevation gain: 1,056 feet. Date hiked: April 6, 2022. Cassidy Trail. 5.6 miles (plus some more). Elevation gain: 682 feet. Date hiked: April 6, 2022 The 2022 Spring Hiking Season has begun! Leti and I decided that for Spring Break we would head to Southern Utah and take in some sights. Today, we went to Red Canyon, which is not far from Bryce Canyon. We are starting the hiking season off right. Our first hike to the Golden Wall was much better than we anticipated. Hence, the four boots instead of three. I usually don't give desert hiking 5 boots because it can be a little drab. However, the views were very beautiful, and the rock formations stunning. We took a little jaunt off the beaten trail to Buckhorn Point. Very, very lovely.  The Golden Wall is behind me, as well as Buckhorn Point.  This trail was also a win ...
