Death by Mt. Raymond via Alexander Basin Trail

Image
ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ 9.6 miles. 4,425 ft. elevation gain. Date hiked: July 16, 2022. Picture taken at Gobbler's Knob with Mt. Raymond in the background, right hand side of the picture. It was on this hike that I was reminded of a piece of imagery that came to my mind a few weeks ago as I was hiking with Leti. Leti, when we hike, is like a mountain goat. Effortlessly scaling mountain tops, occasionally breaking a sweat. Breathing like a normal human. Meanwhile, I am like a hippo in training, gasping for breath as I lumber up the mountain, hoping to summit by some miracle. This is how our hike was yesterday. :) I gave it four boots instead of five because I mainly felt out of shape on this hike.  This hike might be one of those one and done  type hikes for me. We decided to go up Alexander Basin, which was in our top three steepest hiking experiences ever. Something like 1700 ft. elevation gain for .7 of a mile. The first three miles were extremely steep - 1,500 feet per mile. So, as ...

Spring Break Southern Utah Style

Image
ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ðŸ¥¾ Here's Leti standing in front of the Golden Wall at Buckhorn Point. It was more lovely than we imagined.  Golden Wall/Buckhorn Loop. 4.7 miles. Elevation gain: 1,056 feet. Date hiked: April 6, 2022. Cassidy Trail. 5.6 miles (plus some more). Elevation gain: 682 feet. Date hiked: April 6, 2022 The 2022 Spring Hiking Season has begun! Leti and I decided that for Spring Break we would head to Southern Utah and take in some sights. Today, we went to Red Canyon, which is not far from Bryce Canyon. We are starting the hiking season off right. Our first hike to the Golden Wall was much better than we anticipated. Hence, the four boots instead of three. I usually don't give desert hiking 5 boots because it can be a little drab. However, the views were very beautiful, and the rock formations stunning. We took a little jaunt off the beaten trail to Buckhorn Point. Very, very lovely.  The Golden Wall is behind me, as well as Buckhorn Point.  This trail was also a win ...

Winter Hikes with Microspikes. Jan. 2022 Edition

Image
❆❆❆❆ Grandeur Peak. 5.9 miles. 2,356 ft elevation gain. Date hike: Jan. 17, 2022 To celebrate MLK Day, Leti, Rob, and I ventured up Grandeur Peak. I gave this hike four out of five snowflakes. It's a relatively friendly trail. But, at the end, you think you should already be there, and then you have to keep climbing a lot. There is a false summit. Mentally annoying in my opinion, even though I am sure there is a life lesson here. Grandeur Peak is the perfect trail for the winter for a few reasons. One, the trail is packed down because it is so popular. Two, no snakes in the winter. Three, it has great views for not going very many miles up.  The above picture is not Grandeur Peak. Rather, it is taken from Grandeur Peak. How pleasant.  The three of us hit the trail a little after 11. We decided not to go early because we didn't want to freeze. We should have just left early because when you hike uphill in the snow, you really don't need layers (unless you are hiking Everest)...

Yosemite Adventure!

Image
For years, Letizia and I have been going to various and sundry parts of the world to hike. We were supposed to hike Kings Canyon for our most recent vacation, but the park was mainly closed because of the KNP Complex Fires. So, we (and by "we" I mean Letizia) altered our plans, and we headed to Yosemite instead. It was a great decision as far as hiking was concerned. As far as fine dining and strong internet, it wasn't our best choice, but nobody goes to Yosemite for those things anyway. During our stay, we hiked many, many, many miles. I feel like we got to know the park really well. :)  🗻🗻🗻🗻🗻 - This was a five out of five hiking vacation.  Wednesday: Panorama Trail to Nevada Falls.  Distance: 11.4 miles. Elevation gain: 2,857 feet. Date hiked: Oct. 20, 2021 We arrived at our trailhead around 1. The temperature and scenery were just perfect. We headed out to Nevada Falls. Although we have both hiked this trail before, we remembered about 1/8 of it. So, it was practi...
