Sawtooth Hiking Vacation - Version: I think we are on the trail.

Image
When most people think of the perfect hiking vacation, Stanley, Idaho, does not immediately come to mind. And yet, Leti and I found Stanley to be a perfect hiking destination. We could easily get to multiple trailheads. There were not masses of people everywhere. And, downtown Stanley was only a short one minute drive from our Airbnb. Perfect.  Red Fish Lake 🥾🥾🥾🥾 Red Fish Lake. 5.8 miles. 886 vertical feet. Date hiked: July 24, 2023 - Oh Pioneers!  Because we were a little short on time, we decided to take the boat shuttle to the other side of the lake and hike back to the lodge. The shuttle was pleasant. And, it was raining ferociously! So, to start off, we just couldn't see very much, which was a little depressing. Hence, the four boots.  I found a poncho in my backpack. #luckyfind I stayed somewhat dry on the hike. Leti was not dry on the hike until it stopped raining, which was about half way through.  Me wearing the poncho that saved me from being totally wet. The rain wa

Telluride and Black Canyon of the Gunnison Vacation Edition

Image
About three times a year, Leti and I take a vacation from our jobs and hike ourselves all over creation. It's a great tradition. This fall we decided upon Telluride and Black Canyon of the Gunnison. We tried to go here in 2020, but the week we were supposed to go had rain in the forecast. Every. Single. Day. So, we scrapped those plans (because in 2020 you could scrap such plans and blame it on Covid) and went to the Sawtooth's. Well, we finally made it to Telluride. It turned out to be a grand adventure where we experienced fall and winter each day.  🥾🥾🥾🥾🥾 Sneffels High Line and Deep Creek Loop. Miles: 14. 3 Elevation gain: 3,986 ft. Date hiked: Oct. 13, 2022 We decided to do this trail at the last minute. The original trail, we noted, had snow on it, and we didn't have our winter spikes. (We ended up doing it the next day instead!). This trail was just lovely. We only got lost once (and saw person 1 of 3 on the trail). We started up the trail at what I thought was a

Mount Baldy and Sugarloaf Peak Loop

🥾🥾🥾🥾  Leti pointing to Pfeifferhorn (which she hiked a few weeks later) from Mount Baldy Mount Baldy/Sugarloaf Loop: 7.3 miles. 2,988 vertical feet. Date hiked: Aug. 13, 2022 This hike seemed somewhat doomed from the start. But, in the end, it turned out to be a lovely hike. First, we hiked up a road. That's just bad. Hiking up something you can drive up is no bueno. Second, we heard what we thought was an avalanche control boom, which made exactly zero sense. No snow. We learned later that it was a meteor entering planet Earth. And, it was heard all over the Salt Lake Valley. Third, the helicopter about made us crazy. At first, said helicopter looked so cool. And then, said helicopter kept going up and down the mountain. They aren't exactly known for their silence. Said helicopter was carrying steel posts (or metal somethings) for the skiing season. Luckily, that helicopter finished the job before we made it to Mt. Baldy. But, the solitude we were looking for took a while

Trails near Alpine

Image
Approximately three times a year, Leti and I embark on a hiking vacation. We dive into various and sundry mountain ranges and try to take it all in. For our summer vacation, we headed to Alpine, Wyoming, and we hiked around there. The wildflowers were in bloom everywhere we went. It was a lovely vacation.  First stop was Periodic Springs.  🥾🥾🥾🥾 1.5 miles. Elevation gain: 209 feet. Hiked July 20, 2022 This is one of our shorter hikes. And, the name of the Spring was not accurate at this time of year. Last year in July the Springs were periodic. This year, the springs were continuous. So, we hiked up to the springs, ate a snack, waiting to see if the water would slow. It didn't. So, we turned around and headed to our next adventure. It was a lovely 1.5 mile jaunt to discover that the springs were continuous. Ha!  Strawberry Creek Trail to Strawberry Lake 6.4 miles. 1,384 feet elevation gain. Date hiked: July 20, 2022 The next hike we did was to a lake. The drive to the lake was t
